Dattebayo to Stop Fansubbing Naruto on January 15

The fan group Dattebayo has announced that it will stop subtitling and distributing the Naruto anime franchise “permanently” on January 15. That date is when the Naruto.com, Crunchyroll, Hulu, and Joost websites will officially begin streaming the latest episodes of the Naruto Shippūden sequel series one week after their Japanese broadcast — for free. A Dattebayo organizer who uses the alias “Interactii” says that an episode of Naruto Shippūden would get 450,000 downloads from Dattebayo in its first week. According to Dattebayo, the group accumulated 976,405 downloads for episode 20 in 489 days.

“Interactii” notes that Viz Media, the North American distributor of the Naruto anime and manga , had never asked Dattebayo to stop subtitling and had never sent a cease-and-desist letter to the group. He continues, “But like any symbiosis, you have to know when its time to move on. That time has come. Viz and Crunchyroll have gotten their acts together and are trying something new, with one of the most popular shows in anime today. I, and the rest of the staff, know that if we continue to subtitle it, they will have to ask us to stop. That’s something they probably don’t want to have to do, because it will most likely make all of you very mad at them. That’s something they really don’t deserve.”

Crap! …but I have to agree.

Gundam 00 Premieres on U.S. Sci Fi Channel Tonight

Wait, what? It’s Dragon Ball Z, sliced and diced so that it follows the plot of the original Dragon Ball? What the HFIL?

I’m guessing/hoping most of the Dragon Ball kids of years past have grown up and moved on, but maybe Nick is hoping to infect a whole new generation.

The 11 Most Egregious Types of Anime Fan Service by Topless Robot; aka, Why Anime Sucks Nowadays. Did I grow up or did anime dumb down?

Yeah, the He Is My Master OP… Ugh, it’s like, why would I even want to watch that? It just looks so generic, so LCD, so “hello, I’m a show which has nothing to offer.”

And I had heard of Queen’s Blade before, but that clip was the first of anything I’ve seen on it… even more offensive than the “plot,” such as it was, was the horrid cheap-ass animation. All pans and slides and flapping lips.

Kind of a depressing article, all told. (And, yeah, definitely NSFW.)

Yeah, pretty much.

Imagine DBZ with faster pacing (so it’s not Drag-On Ball Zzzzzzzzzzzzz) and the filler cut out.

Really? No 54 episode fights? That would almost make it good.

I’m curious as to how they’ll handle the explosion of Namek.

Have you all heard about “Bundgate?” Dance in the Vampire Bund is a currently-airing-in-Japan aminoo series (based on a currently-published-in-the-US mango) about a naked eleven-year-old and also vampires or something. For some reason, Funimation decided that they could embetter the lives of millions of Americans by releasing it domestically, but with edits (most likely with the recent Handley case ruling forefront in mind). After the usual frothing-at-the-mouth from entitlement-syndrome otaku, they came back with another statement saying they would be able to release the episodes they’ve seen so far without edits but will have to play the rest by ear. It appears that the mango is not being edited.

Of course, this whole fracas could have been avoided if Funi just hadn’t licensed this shit in the first place.

They talked about that on the AnnCast. It’s much ado about not much. I suspect that fungi licensed this before the Handley thing happened. This anime is top heavy with fan service, so to speak. There is a lot of that going around lately and I don’t let it get in the way of a good story. I just roll my eyes and keep going. I don’t know if this show falls into this category or not. I am no fan of vampires and excessive fan service is annoying.

I don’t know why you keep zeroing in on the crappiest anime all the time, AB. This season didn’t look too promising at first but there were a few gems hidden in there. A couple of good ones out of a large field is par for the course. I believe they have already been mentioned. Durarara!! is very good and Nodame Cantabile Finale is living up to its previous seasons. Even though it’s not your cup of teeth, Sora no Woto continues to be quite watchable even though it still lacks plot and shows no sign of going anywhere near where I had hoped.

One you may want to add to your Netflix lineup is Ghost Hound (Not to be confused with Ghost Hunt_). It’s a deliciously creepy story with a maddeningly disappointing, cop out of an ending which is nevertheless well worth seeing. This is one you’ll burn through in one sitting - or want to. Just don’t watch the last episode so you can keep speculating about how it should end.

Trailer for season 3 of The Boondocks.

Last season? Is that a promise?

And are they really only on Season 3? It’s been around for longer than that, hasn’t it?

Albright:

Last season? Is that a promise?

Yes, it’s the last season.

And are they really only on Season 3? It’s been around for longer than that, hasn’t it?

This show is extremely expensive and time-consuming to produce. For the past several years, we’ve been used to the mindset where Williams Street fires up Flash and has entire seasons’ worth of episodes ready every few months. This is not that kind of show.

Yeah, that’s about the only good thing I can think of to say about that racist POS is that it is quality animation.

I never got “used to” that garbage that Williams Street craps out. I would find the static on a vacant channel more entertaining.

Dreamworks latest offering, How to Train Your Dragon may well be the best thing they have produced to date.

MAD coming to (not) Adult Swim.

EDIT: Just Cartoon Network. Whoops.

That could be very, very good or very, very bad. From what they said, I fear that it will be both.

Good point. I didn’t think of that.

The MAD thing sounds like it could be fun. I wouldn’t mind checking that out if I get the chance.

A few interesting updates.

There’s a preview from Comic-Con. (Skip to 1:23 for the animation.)

MAD premieres September 6 at 8:30PM.

Also, trailer for new Venture Bros.

I don’t care what they call it, I just hope it’s good. Although watching it gives the impression that season 3 quality is about as good as it’ll be.

This live action Bleach trailer actually looks pretty good. Too bad it’s a fake like this:

Another preview for the new animated MAD series. This time, it’s a promo from Cartoon Network.

Yeah, I know. Lame. =[

I just acquired Perfect Blue last week and Tokyo Godfathers yesterday. So now I’ve seen all of his movies.

UPDATE: Satoshi Kon, His Wife, Madhouse Studio Write About His Passing. It’s good that they will finish his last movie but sad that there won’t be any more.
