What are you playing?

Played the absolute hell out of Fallout 3, and I’m still managing to retain interest thanks to the already active modding community. Kind of amazing that Bethesda has yet to release the construction toolset and the quality of the mods that are already out so far. Can’t wait to see what the mod community cooks up when Bethesda releases the toolset later this month.

Still playing Navy Field too. Finally got my tier 2 sub, a German Type VIIA U-Boat which I have named the DKM (Deustche Kriegsmarine) Poopchute. Huge step up from the tier 1 (earlier, meaning worse) sub, the Type II, in terms of capabilities; four frontal torpedo tubes (one more than the Type II), a deck gun, and one rear-facing tube that I unfortunately can’t use yet for a lack of qualified crew. Been wreaking absolute havoc compared to my lackluster exploits in the Type II, sinking more and larger ships more consistently and severely damaging battleships whereas before I couldn’t even get within range. The most fun aspect for me is the mindgames this allows me to play with the enemy battleship lines, like surfacing early to let them know I’m there, then submerging again and making them worry about whether I’m within range yet to throw off their concentration from fighting my team’s battleships. When it works, I’m absolutely hooked on being able to push back the enemy battleship line by the threat of my presence alone, as it means the potential for extra-powerful torpedoes with not much time to dodge along with my team’s ships seeing them thanks to shared team sight radius. Normally scout planes handle this, but they can be shot down; it’s demoralizing to have an unseen submarine doing the same thing.

Awww! I thought this thread was about music. I was going to say Macross Frontier OST by Yoko Kanno.

Call of Duty 4, mostly. That game continues to be the best online shooter around. I’ve also been playing Gears of War 2 (Horde, mostly) and Fallout 3 quite a bit.

After I get paid this week, a good portion of my life is probably going to get destroyed by Fable II, so looking forward to that.

PS- Wow, things sure have changed ‘round these parts. This is Nosferatu, by the way.

Citizen Snips:

L4D trumps CoD4 for me. CoD4 is full of tards who can’t kill anything unless they dump an entire M4 mag at distant shapes moving on the horizon. L4D Versus mode is the most fun I’ve had in a multiplayer shooter for a long, long time.

L4D does look pretty fun, but as I have yet to play it I wouldn’t know. Buy it for me, and be rewarded with warm, fuzzy feelings inside.

The L4D demo is available for Xbox 360, and there’s probably one for PS3 too. I played it. As one who tends to lean towards single-player games, it wasn’t up my alley, but I can imagine it’d be a lot of fun if you had a regular crew to get together and play with.

That’s sort of the catch with L4D, it’s only fun if you know enough people to get a game going at random times. I usually play with a regular group for a gaming forum I post on, and that makes for good times. Voice comm is a must since there’s no way you can coordinate enough via typing, and half the fun is laughing about crazy stuff that’s happening over it.

Left 4 Dead? Moar liek hacked 2 death, amirite?

Haven’t seen any of the hacking or exploits myself, but that’s usually because I always seem to log in after patches have rendered them unusable. None of the other guys I’ve played have had anything to say on the subject either, so I guess it’s just a 360 thing.

Yup, Fable II is destroying my life.

kewlz

Animal Crossing: City Folk. This is my first time jumping on the AC bandwaggon. I love it way too much.

Timewaster games like Harvest Moon (and Animal Crossing from what I know of it) have a strange hold over me. I know I’m not really accomplishing anything, but I’ll be damned if I don’t maximize my crop-growing potential.

Playing Advance Wars: Days of Ruin. The uselessness of artillery units in how I play the game makes me RAAAAAAAAAAAGE. Can’t move and fire in the same turn? BULLSHIT. The only way I currently see them being useful is if I employ meat-grinder tactics, and send in units to be killed by the enemy so I can counterattack with artillery.

I got the first Harvest Moon for SNESS on the Virtual Console, but I quickly got bored with doing the same thing in the same environment over and over… The original Animal Crossing held my attention for a little while longer, but it’s still not a game I’d consider purchasing it for myself. I did get the NDS version for my sister, though; maybe she’ll like it.

I loved the GBA Advance Wars games. A tactic that worked a little too well for those games, especially in the levels that didn’t have a turn limit, was to flood the map with a bunch of cheap infantry units to impair the enemy’s movements while you build up a stronger force to go through and really pound ‘em. If you surround an enemy factory with units, they’ll still be able to build more units, but they won’t be able to move anywhere, so they’ll have to stay on the factory tile - making it impossible for them to build a new unit with that factory next turn.

I used to do that too, but meat-grinder tactics don’t work very well in this one mainly because the maps are so much larger, and also the enemy AI tends to field more anti-infantry units (Recon, Bike, Light Tanks, Anti-Air, other Infantry or Mech units). I’m also compulsive about minimizing casualties on my end, so even if I could do my best “human wave” tactics imitation I probably won’t.

Also, what’s the deal with Mech units and their anti-tank missiles? Do they only fire them on the defense if they haven’t been moved or attacked previously? My tanks always seem to get hosed by rockets whenever I attack enemy Mech units, but I’ve seen my own Mech units use their assault rifles against enemy tanks when on the defensive.

I don’t know about Days of Ruin, but in Dual Strike your Mech. units only had 3 bazooka shots before they needed supplied.

It’s not ammo availability, I’ve had issues with Mechs that I know have sufficient ammo supply. I’ll probably just end up making some maps with Mechs right next to each other to test for it.

After two years of mostly happy Ecksbawks 360 ownership… I recently got RRODeeded.

Okay. Well.

If you don’t mind digging through hardware guts, here’s a fix for that.

Hmm. Not really a fix so much as a cleaning and reseating of the cooling surfaces. Looks like a lot of work, too. Meh, if I can’t get this one to work again without taking it apart and I decide I really need another 360. I’ll just buy a new one, probably.

Are you covered under their 3-year warranty?

I don’t know. Maybe. I’d have to dig out the box and the docs - if I still have it all; I’m not sure - and then I suppose I’d have to call and have someone walk me through basic troubleshooting steps like I’m an idiot and then they’d send me a box and I’d put it in the box and send it back and then like two months later they’ll send me back the Xbox and I bet they’ll forget to include the hard drive or something so I’ll lose all my saved stuff. Like I really want to go through that fucking dance again. (Did it with my PSTwo and a laptop…)

Meh. Maybe once this relatively busy week winds down. I’m really not missing the ecksbocks that much now.

I recently picked up the much-ballyhooed The Conduit on a whim. There’s a few annoyances - the alien designs are somewhat uninspired, weapons aren’t as balanced as Halo (though that’s a pretty high bar to achieve) and I triggered a fall-through-the-floor bug once - and the story is a bunch of American mysticism/conspiracy theory crap which is nigh unintelligible, but otherwise it’s a pretty competent FPS The graphics are indeed pretty and everything runs smoothly, though they could have toned down the bloom lighting effects a bit.

A moment of silence, please.

Thank you.

I noticed that when I was writing the date on my notes in class today.
