CN Upfront 2009

Toon Zone has the (constantly updating) scoop on the big upfront.

The big news will make old fans happy: Genndy is back and working on a new series!

Oh, brother. Total Drama Island is spreading like a fungus. This must be an evil Canadian plot to take over America by targeting its youth or something.

It’s good to see that CN is still willing to take a chance on Genndy.

Have you ever actually watched Total Drama Island? It’s actually wickedly funny, which is where the appeal is.

I’ll bow to your wizdumb, Fata. There have been some several shows I had written off as beneath my notice that I later had to admit were very good. I’m still strangely unmotivated to find that out in this case, though.

I think I saw it twice, back when I still had cable. I guess we have different definitions of “wickedly funny.” Either that, or you find awkward portrayals of teenage stereotypes to be riotous.

Again, the ‘awkward portrayals of teenage stereotypes’ is not where the funny is. The funny part of that show was the host’s sadistic glee at making the awkward stereotypes suffer as much as possible. Heck, the more you dislike the characters, the more enjoyable it is when Chris feeds them a shit sandwich.

It suddenly struck me why shows like Moribito do so poorly on AS. Who is it that makes up a large portion of AS’ audience? They’re young adults whiling away a Saturday night. They’re drinking and talking with friends with AS on the tube. You can’t watch Moribito that way. You have to watch it in it’s proper sequence and pay attention. There is too much story and not enough action for the casual viewer.

This also explains why those mindlessly stupid, so-called “comedies” do so well. I could see where those lame-ass atrocities might be mistaken for something actually funny if you were only catching a line here and there. Now I only have to explain why those people aren’t repulsed by their visual ugliness.
