Science & Tech

When there’s a new discovery or invention, it goes here.

To make your Thanksgiving easier…

That looks… perverted. Am I the only one who sees it?

Daikun:
California approves bullet train.

Fuck yeah.

Too bad I’ll be an old man by the time they finish it.

Fuck no. It’ll be hella expensive and only help those who live in the corridor between San Diego and the Bay Area. I voted no on that. Unfortunately, most of the people in California - and most of the spendspendspend liberals - live in the corridor between San Diego and the Bay Area.

That’s pretty old news AB, where have you been? For that matter, you could have saved a lot of time if you had believed me when I told you that AGW was a hoax years ago.

When did I say I didn’t believe you?

…but I can’t see anything with the blast shield down.

Interclue - Preview entire web pages in Firefox before actually clicking onto them.

You can also click on embedded links in the previewed pages, so if you want to skip certain pages and speed up your browsing, this will let you do that.

That must have inconvenienced several people.

2009 is the International Year of Astronomy. Look up! I mean, this stuff is pretty much the very definition of awesome.

Albright:
Almost all of the world’s 30GB Zunes die simultaneously.

Ouch. This is an eff-up of monstrous proportions.

I actually watched as this happened to my Zune. I drained the battery and then charged it again only to find it in the same state. Hopefully it’s an issue that will correct itself after the new year.

Actually, that’s exactly the issue; apparently, some bit of software in the Zune wasn’t leap year compatible, so when this 366th day of the year rolled around, it flipped out and stopped working. Microsoft is telling everyone to just wait until tomorrow, when their Zunes should just magically start working again (or so they say). For another four years, anyway.

How weird. It’ll be interesting to see what all the fallout from this is.

It looks something like this…

Microsoft Songsmith demo video

Interesting tech. Too bad they opted for one of these totally cornball videos to show it off.

EDIT: Actual video of it in use here. Hmm, it sounds very very MIDI-ish.

With this and Vocaloid there’s almost no need for us humans anymore!

Mineral oil submerged computer. Clever. These guys took an aquarium, put computer guts in it, then filled it with mineral oil to cool it. With their second version with a built-in radiator, they’ve made it run remarkably cool and very quiet. Nice.

That’s awesome. I had heard of the vegetable oil ones before, but like the article mentioned, the part about the oil going rancid after a couple of months made it less appealing than this option.

Cartoon Network’s FusionFall is now online. The gameplay is pretty simplistic, it’s not a technical marvel and it crashed my browser when I tried to quit… but it’s fun.

Ars reviews Jetpack Dreams, a book about man’s obsession to fly with jetpacks.

If I had more time to waste, I’d be on there griefing like mad.

There’s no PVP. Pretty much the only annoying thing you can do to another player that I’ve noticed so far is repeatedly invite them to join your party. If they can’t figure out how to use the “ignore player” feature, that might annoy them a little bit.
